He was born in Mantee, MS, on Dec. 16, 1921, and is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Dr. Frances Larraine Tunnell Carter, his son, LtCol Wayne Carter, USMC, Ret (Regina), and his daughter Nell Carter Branum (Jim), seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Henry S. Carter (Mary). He was the retired Dean of the School of Education at Samford University, where he taught for more than 30 years. As a World War II US Army paratrooper, he landed in the Southern France invasion and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a long-time member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, where he directed the Conversational English ESL program for many years, and he continued teaching Sunday School until age 91. He also wrote books and denominational curriculum for the Southern Baptist Convention for more than 25 years. Dr. Carter was a LtCol in the Civil Air Patrol, a member of the Silver-Haired Legislature and Silver-Haired Congress, and past national President and Executive Director of the Fellowship of Baptist Educators. He led more than 15 short-term mission trips to China, Honduras, Russia, Indonesia, and Mexico, and he had two semester-long professorships at Anhui Normal University in Wuhu, China and Hong Kong Baptist University. More recently, Dr. Carter and his wife have presented more than 250 programs as Rosie the Riveter and her World War II Paratrooper to numerous local organizations and in 17 states. A Celebration Service will be held Friday, March 7, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Fellowship Hall of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, with lunch to follow. There will be no graveside service as he requested that his body be given to the UAB School of Medicine so that he can continue teaching. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the John and Frances Carter Scholarship Fund at Samford University.
