FAIRVIEW, W.Va. | Marine Lance Corporal John T. "Tommy" Byrd II, 23, of Fairview, died Oct. 30, 2004 in a car bomb attack on a truck outside Fallujah. He was born in Fairmont, W.Va., the son of John Thomas and Nan Cantrell Byrd of Fairview. Tommy was a graduate of North Marion High School, spent some time working in a restaurant in Myrtle Beach. After the 9/11 attacks he decided to enlist in the Marines and was stationed in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where he was a rifleman in the First Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. In addition to his parents, Tommy is survived by his wife, Jessica Marie Casey Byrd, who is expecting their first child, a son, Elijah Cade Byrd. He is also survived by a sister, Hollynoel Elizabeth Byrd of Fairview; four uncles, Richard E. and David R. Byrd of Sanford Community, Steven Lee Cantrell of Alabama and John Wayne Cantrell of Charleston, W.Va.; paternal grandmother, Matha Dee Byrd of Sanford Community and maternal grandmother, Letha Elizabeth Cantrell of Gassaway, W.Va. His paternal grandfather, Clifford Earl Byrd and his maternal grandfather, Overton Lee Cantrell, predeceased Tommy in death. Friends and family may call at Domico Funeral Home, Curry Chapel in Fairview from 1 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday; on Thursday they may call at the Noel's Ark Assembly of God Church in Fairview from 10 to 1 p.m. The funeral service will be a 1 p.m. at the church with the Rev.
