John Smith, III - ALLENHURST - John Smith, III, 54, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at his residence after a long illness. John was born August 6, 1954 to the late John Smith, Jr. in Tacoma, Washington. He was the oldest of 3 girls and 3 boys. He was also the quietest sibling in the family. John attended high school in Chicago, IL and then went on to attend Oakwood College in Alabama. After leaving Oakwood, John dedicated 22 years of service to the US Army, until retiring as a Warrant Officer (CW02). During his loyal service to our country he served in Desert Storm and several deployments in different countries. He enjoyed traveling and visiting many other countries while he was in the service. During these travels he saw many wonderful things as well as meeting a diverse group of people. He was also a member of Grand Lodge of Maryland, Lodge #130, F&AM for many years and supported the military community. Even after his retirement he continued to stay connected to the military and continued working in the community as a civilian. Until recently he worked as a contractor in Hunter, passing on the knowledge he received while in the service. A few years ago he moved to Fort Stewart, GA from Germany with his wife, Pok Smith, since then John was an active member of the Marne Chapel. He loved to read books and watch comedies. He was a devoted and loving father and husband. Recently he lost his prolonged battle with his illness. However, he did not give up his faith and hopes. He was optimistic about life until John peacefully went to be with the Lord. There's no more sorrow and pain. Surviving are his wife, Pok Smith of Allenhurst; daughter, Sonya Smith of Valdosta; mother, Bessie Smith of Huntsville, AL; brother, David Smith of Huntsville, AL; three sisters Vanessa Smith and Cora Smith of Chicago, IL and Cynthia Smith of Huntsville, AL; two grandchildren, Nikolas and Marc Christie of Valdosta.
