EASTON John R. Schermerhorn III, 53, of Marcellus Lane, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at home following a long illness. Born in Corinth, September 10, 1949, he was the son of the late John R. and Mary Baird Schermerhorn Jr. John was a hospital corpsman with the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War Era. A self-employed auto body repairman for most of his life, John also worked in the past for Dale George, Nemith Motors and Marshall Garage. John enjoyed boating and tinkering with cars as hobbies. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Holly Griffen Schermerhorn, whom he married September 18, 1976; a son, Robert John Schermerhorn of Pa.; two daughters, Sheri Ziegenfus of Pa. and Charlene R. Schermerhorn of Easton; six grandchildren; three sisters, Gail DeMarsh of Warrensburg, Dawn Clay of Fla. and Diane Quinn of Conn.; a brother, David Cook of Mass.; along with brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A burial service with military honors will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery entrance at 1:45 p.m., Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greenwich Rescue Squad.
