Obituary of John R. Harrington


FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. John R. Harrington, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died on June 2, 2008, after a short illness. He was born in Framingham to the late Florence M. and John R. Harrington Sr. He grew up in Holliston, attended Northeast University and graduated from Boston University Law School. He practiced law for 29 years and presided as a municipal judge for 14 years. He was a member of a number of fraternal organizations, including the Elks, Eagles and Moose. Mr. Harrington was a charter member of the Broward County Criminal Defense Association in the 1960s, a member of the First Broward County Charter Review Board, and president and founder of the Harrington Kidney Foundation. He belonged to the Scottish Rite of Lake Worth and was a 32nd degree Mason. He served in Korea, earned two battle stars and a China service ribbon. He was thereafter transferred to the staff of the commander in chief Pacific, where he served two years before being discharged. Mr. Harrington is survived by Jean Harrington, the former Jean Carter, of Bar Harbor, Maine; two sons, John and Scott; a daughter, Tracy Miller; and four grandchildren, Daniel, Andrew, Savannah and John R. III. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara M. Wood, of Osterville, and many nieces and nephews. Services will be private.
