BUTLER - John R. II, 77, of Glen Rock, formerly of Ridgewood, died after a long illness on Saturday, October 2nd. A 34 year resident of the Village of Ridgewood, he retired from Midland Marine Corporation in 1994 after 31 years as vice president. Born in New York City on February 12, 1927, he was raised in Garden City, Long Island and educated at Loyola School in Manhattan. He was a combat veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. After the service, he attended New York University, graduating from the University of Evansville with a BS degree. He began his business career with Texaco's marine department where he was transferred throughout the country setting up new marine installations. In 1961, Mr. Butler joined Midland Marine Corporation in New York City where he worked until his retirement. An active volunteer, he served on the Ho-Ho-Kus school board before moving to Ridgewood. He was a co-founder of the Ridgewood Soccer Association in 1978 and was a charter member of the Ridgewood Sports Council. He also served on the boards of the YWCA and the Ridgewood Republican Club. He was an elected County Committeeman for District I for many years. Mr. Butler was a charter member of the AM Rotary and the Ridgewood Stablehands Society. In 1980, he received the Mayor's Award of Excellence for his many volunteer efforts. A parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, he served as a parish council member and as an usher. He was a member of the Ridgewood Country Club, the New York Athletic Club and the 7th Regiment Armory-Board of Managers. He married Carried Anderson in 1953 and raised a family in the Village of Ridgewood. He is survived by his wife, Carrie Anderson Butler and his children: Mary Helen Butler Carroll of Minnetonka, MN; John R. Butler, III of Glen Rock, NJ and Patrick Brendan Butler of New York, NY. In addition, Mr. Butler is survived by six grandchildren: Mary Carroll, Catherine Butler, John R. Butler, IV, Sara Butler, Ann Butler and Natalie Butler. Funeral Services provided by The Feeney Funeral Home, 232 Franklin Ave., Ridgewood, NJ 201-444-7650. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 6 at 10:45 AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel RC Church, Ridgewood. Interment will follow at Valleau Cemetery, Ridgewood. Friends and family may visit Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
