Dr. John Hershel Pitts, 76, of Simpsonville, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at home. Born in Georgia, he was the son of the late John C. and Lula Hazel Stamey Pitts and husband of the late Mary Jane Harrington Pitts. Dr. Pitts was a criminal psychologist and a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science degree; received his master's degree from the University of South Carolina and his doctorate from East Texas State University. Surviving are his children and their spouses. His daughter, Rhonda Pitts of Hickory Tavern; two sons, Joseph J. Pitts of Simpsonville and Alex L. Pitts of Estill Springs, Tenn.; a sister, Sandra Price of Woodruff; and a brother, Tom Pitts of Greer; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Beth Haven Baptist Church on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
