JOHN OREN CARTER, M.D. HOBART, IN John Oren Carter, M.D., born July 8, 1928 in Anderson, IN passed away at St. Mary Medical Center on April 26, 2011. John attended Muncie Central High School and from there joined the Navy at age 17. He was stationed in New York and San Diego and eventually was assigned to the medical corps as a corpsman. It was this experience that guided him to medicine. After leaving the Navy, John enrolled at Indiana University, Bloomington where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa after three years and enrolled in medical school. He graduated from I.U. Medical School in 1956 with Phi Beta Pi Honors. He met and married Charlene Riley in 1953 prior to beginning med school. In med school, John met his three dear friends who convinced him to come to the Region and completed his internship in Gary at Mercy Hospital. He then moved to Hobart where he initially went into solo practice. He then joined Lake George Medical Center in 1958 where he remained in practice until he passed away. John enjoyed fishing, golfing, coin collecting, working in his yard, and being with his family. He was an avid I. U. basketball and Brickie football fan. He loved his medical practice working alongside his two sons and being at the office visiting and caring for his patients. He delivered many children in Hobart. He was also a past President of St. Mary Medical Center and a longtime member of St. Bridget Church. Dr. Carter is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Charlene; three children: Dr. Mark (Cindy) Carter, MaryAnn "Mimi" (Jonathan "Jay") Herr both of Hobart; and Dr. John E. (Kim) Carter of Valparaiso; five grandchildren: Matthew, Jacob, Kaitlin Carter, Christine Herr and Riley Carter. He was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Madi Carter; and his parents and sisters. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 9:15 a.m. from Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart going to St. Bridget Church, 568 E. 2nd St., Hobart for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dominic Bertino officiating. Entombment in Graceland Cemetery Mausoleum, Valparaiso. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Friday from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, Hobart.
