->DADE CITY, Fla. - John M. Michaud, also from Caribou and Guilford, passed away peacefully at the age of 86, on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Hospice House, Auburn, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.Born on Dec. 16, 1926, John was employed as a Station Agent and Telegrapher with the Canadian Pacific Railroad in 1946. He worked in various locations in the Eastern Division including Caribou, Presque Isle and North Devon, NB. He married Claire Kirby of Brownville Junction in 1948. Claire was also employed as a telegrapher in Hardy Pond after the war and their first date was arranged over the telegraph. He retired as Agent/Operator in Greenville, in 1984.John's favorite hobby was square dance calling and teaching. Over 40 years, John taught hundreds of students and made lifelong friends through his teaching in Aroostook and Piscataquis County, New Brunswick, and central Florida. John was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and golf and was devoted to his family and four grandchildren. In October 2013, just a few weeks before his passing, John returned to Lac Megantic, PQ, his family home, for a reunion. The return was bittersweet because Megantic was the site of a recent railroad accident that took 47 lives. He was deeply troubled by the toll to the family and friends of his hometown but was grateful to see them once again.John is survived by his wife, Claire; his brothers, Guy and Luc; and his children, Maurice Michaud of Dade City, Fla., Paul Michaud of Waltham, Paula Michaud of Jacksonville, Fla., and Greg Michaud and his wife, Becky Drew Michaud, and grandchildren, Drew, Aidan, Adam, and Noah, of Freeport.A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Sacred Heart Church, Main Street, Yarmouth. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing in Lewiston.
