GUILDERLAND John Laurence Williams, age 67, of Guilderland, passed away after a brief illness on May 18, 2003 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on May 8, 1936, the son of the late Laurence and Anna (Callahan) Williams. Mr. Williams graduated from the University at Albany in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and received a master's degree in education in 1961. He began working for Guilderland Central School District in 1960 as a junior high math teacher. In 1966, he became the supervisor of mathematics. He received a NSF scholarship to attend Union College, where he completed his master's degree in mathematics. In 1966, he was granted a sabbatical and completed the course work for a doctorate in educational psychology from the University at Albany. Mr. Williams retired as the supervisor of mathematics at the Alton U. Farnsworth Middle School in 1997 after 37 years as an educator. John loved math and worked to instill that love in all his students. His greatest loves were his wife of 43 years, Joan, his family, friends and traveling. He enjoyed vacationing on the Sacandaga Reservoir, the Adirondacks, Cape Cod, the New England states and Europe. He will be remembered for the love that he showed others with the caring letters and cards he sent, his keen sense of humor and the photos he took over the years of family and friends. His special interests were the Revolutionary War, nature, listening to many different types of music, taking weekend trips, watching sporting events and old movies. He is survived by his wife, Joan (Argotsinger) Williams; his two daughters, Pam and Jay Danek of Vestal, N.Y. and Lynne and Steven Meyers of Texas; his two sons, Jeff and Dale Williams of Niskayuna and Tim and Karen Williams of Denmark; ten grandchildren, Jason, Colin, Michael and Shawn Danek, Andrew and Eric Meyers, Matthew, Kara and Reed Williams and Noah Williams; his father-in-law, Peter Argotsinger of Mayfield, N.Y.; sister, Catherine and Jules Bilodeau of Ariz.; his sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Gene Goodemote, Kathy and Doug Sieg, Jan and Jerry Moore, all of Gloversville, Alice France of Guilderland; many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Doris Argotsinger. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at The Church of St. Madeleine Sophie, 3500 Carman Rd., Guilderland, N.Y. Friends and relatives may call at the DeMARCO-STONE FUNERAL HOME, 5216 WESTERN TURNPIKE, GUILDERLAND (opposite Guilderland Town Hall) on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. A graveside committal service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Broadalbin Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to either the William A. Wright Scholarship Award in care of Johnstown High School, 2 Wright Dr., Johnstown, NY 12095 or the Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308.
