ObituaryJohn L. 'Jack' McDowell, III, 63, 830 S. Front Street, Selinsgrove, PA died at 3:15 p.m. p.m. Saturday, February 9, 2002, at his home after an illness of seven months. He was born August 24, 1938 in Mahoning Township, Montour County, PA a son of the late John L., Jr. and Helen C. 'Jo' Heim McDowell. He resided in Selinsgrove for six years and had resided in Bloomsburg, PA for many years. He also maintained a home in Fort Myers, FL. He was a 1956 graduate of Mercersburg Academy (PA) and a 1960 graduate of Amherst College (Mass) with a degree in economics. He was the owner of McDowell Oil Service and Silver Salmon LP. He was the owner of the former Time Markets all in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Christ Community United Methodist Church near Selinsgrove, PA. He was a former president of the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association, the Bloomsburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the Bloomsburg Area Industrial Development Association. He served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of the Geisinger Health Plan, Danville, PA. He served as vice-president of the Pennsylvania Underground Storage Tank Indemnification Board. He was elected to the Board of Regents of the Mercersburg Academy in 1983 serving until recently and he chaired the Development Committee from 1985 to 1998. He was a member of the Fiddlesticks Country Club, Fort Myers, Florida; Susquehanna Country Club, Shamokin Dam, PA, Larry's Creek Fish & Game Club, PA and Bloomsburg Elks Lodge #436. Surviving are his wife, the former Susan Wilhelm; a son, John L. McDowell, IV, Newport, Rhode Island; a daughter, Mrs. Robert P. (Karen) Martson, Plymouth, Rhode Island; a step-son, Jeffrey W. Pifer, Orlando, Florida; a step-daughter, Mrs. Charles W. 'Chuck' (Kimberly) Smeltz, Selinsgrove, PA; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Dennis (Jill) Corkum, Rockland, Maine. Funeral, Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in Lightstreet United Methodist Church, Lightstreet, PA with his pastor, Rev. Barry Robinson and Rev. Stephen G. Portner, pastor of the Church officiating. Interment in Lightstreet 'Highland' Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, PA Tuesday 6 - 9 p.m. No viewing at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials gifts may be sent to the Palliative Medicine Program, c/o Geisinger Foundation, 100 N. Academy Ave., Danville, PA 17822-4000.
