John Jay Underwood III, 59, Rogersville, passed away at 3:54 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, 2006, in Cox Medical Center South, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with ALS. He was born December 5, 1946, in Springfield, the son of the late John and Earline (DeWitt) Underwood. He was united in marriage on October 10, 1981, in Rogersville to Jean L. Vaughan. Jay was a 1964 graduate of Rogersville High School and a 1966 graduate of Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri. He was a longtime farmer and cattle rancher in Rogersville. He had served two terms on the American International Charolais Association Board of Directors, as well as served a number of years on the Junior Council Committee. He also served on the Logan-Rogersville Board of Education where he served on the building committee to build the new high school. He was an avid basketball fan and loved coaching, as well as watching his three children play through the years. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jean two daughters and their husbands, Wendy and Chance Dukewits and Jill and Scott Dickey and a son, Clint Underwood, all of Rogersville two grandchildren, Katie and Tate Dukewits a brother, Tom Underwood, Rogersville an aunt, Blondie Breedlove and her husband, Bill a sister-in-law and her husband, Jan and Stan Guin his father-in-law, Don Vaughan and his wife, Shirley, all of Springfield a nephew, and his wife, Troy and Charity Underwood three nieces, Joy Pitts and her husband, Doug, Emily and Whitney Guin, all of Rogersville two great-nieces, Abby and Ashley Pitts and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006, in the Logan-Rogersville High School Auditorium. Burial will follow in Holland Cemetery, Rogersville. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today, May 26, 2006, in J.D. Lee and Sons Funeral Home, at the corner of Highway 60 and Farm Road 223 west of Rogersville.
