YORK, Maine -- Col. John J. Harrington, U.S. Air Force (ret.), died July 5, 2009, at Seal Rock Healthcare Facility in Saco. He was born Jan. 6, 1932, in Boston, son of James and Helen Harrington. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Jamaica Plain in 1949, Boston College in 1953 and earned advanced degrees from Southern Illinois University and George Washington University. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of active duty. He received the Bronze Star, two Meritorious Service Medals, the Joint Service Commendation Medal and three Air Force Commendation Medals. His most recent military assignment was commandant of the Air Force ROTC Detachment at the University of New Hampshire. He was a professor of business administration at New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University), retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. Christopher Church, York, and Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, Fla. He was an active golfer. The family includes his wife, Christine; a son Michael; two daughters, Kathryn and Lizabeth; a step-daughter, Catherine Phaneuf; and four granddaughters. SERVICES: Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Christopher Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York. Burial will follow in the First Parish Cemetery.
