CLIFTON PARK John H. Nair III, 83, of Barney Road, Clifton Park passed away peacefully on Monday, June 21, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany following a brief illness. Born in Syracuse, N.Y. on Nov. 21, 1920, he was the son of the late John H. Nair and Claire Cook Nair. He was a graduate of Nottingham High School in Syracuse, a 1941 graduate of Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. with a degree in chemistry and where he was also the manager of the lacrosse team and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He received his master of science degree in chemistry in 1948 from the University of Pittsburgh, where he also did further graduate study concentrating in toxicology. Mr. Nair served in the U.S. Army during World War II working in army infantry heavy weapons and later transferred to the medical branch as a staff sergeant, in the army medical nutrition laboratory attached to the office of the Surgeon General. Being fluent in German, he served for a year in Germany after V-E Day covering all of occupied Germany conducting interviews and surveying the nutritional needs of the German civilian population. Upon discharge from the Army, Mr. Nair worked for the H.J. Heinz Co., in Pittsburgh, Pa. and later for Mellon Institute (now Carnegie Mellon University) as part of a Union Carbide Fellowship. He later conducted research for the Syracuse University Research Corporation. His work included toxicology studies in air and water pollution, as well as government safety inspections of paper packaging plants all over the country. Beginning in 1973 he worked as a quality control specialist for General Electric Silicones in Waterford, N.Y., retiring in 1983. After retiring, Mr. Nair pursued his love of flying and earned his pilot's license. An avid ham radio enthusiast, he was on the radio every day talking to friends all over the world. He had many friends in the Carrier Net and the Grave Yard Net (a very early morning ham radio group). He also enjoyed golf, woodworking and for many years was a model railroad enthusiast. He was a member of the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, the Society of Sigma Xi, the American Chemical Society and the Society of Toxicology. Mr. Nair is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Richards Nair; his two daughters, Laura E. Nair and Jennifer A. Nair of Clifton Park; his son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Joanne Nair of Stillwater; three granddaughters, Laura, Meagan and Shelby of Stillwater. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Janet N. Adams of Raleigh, N.C.; his nieces, Karen A. (Jack) Fox of Thurstaston, England, Susan A.(John) Bowden of Raleigh, N.C., his cousin Barbara Hastorf of Palo Alto, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A calling hour will be held on Friday, June 25th at 11:00 a.m. at the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, Route 146 in Clifton Park. Services will follow at 12:00 p.m. Burial with military honors will occur Friday afternoon at the Saratoga National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shenendehowa United Methodist Church, 971 Route 146 Clifton Park, NY 12065 or to the American Lung Association, 3 Winners Circle, Albany, NY 12205.
