EASTBROOK and ELLSWORTH - John H. "Jack" Jordan, 81, passed away peacefully Jan. 9, 2011, at an Ellsworth hospital after a short illness. He was born March 23, 1929, in Ellsworth, son of Herman A. and Anna "Nan" M. (Doyle) Jordan. Jack was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a gifted athlete and was a graduate of the Ellsworth High School in 1947, where he played three seasons of baseball losing only one game. Jack played semi-pro baseball locally on the Lamoine team, later managing it. He also played for the minor league theater system of baseball, for the team formally known as the Philadelphia Athletics. Then after joining the service, he played for their U.S. Air Force baseball in the U.S. and in Europe. Jack worked for New England Telephone Co. as it changed hands many times and retired with Verizon in 1983 after several decades of service in the Ellsworth area. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Ellsworth, and Telephone Pioneers. Jack liked to spend time at his camp in Eastbrook, writing fictional stories and composing music that he played on his accordion. He was survived by his wife, Elsbeth of Ellsworth; three sons, James and his wife, Coral, of Hermon, Larry of Portsmouth and Peter and his wife, Donna, of Standish; four grandchildren, Steven and Ryan Jordan of Standish, Renee Jordan of Boston and Caleb Jordan of Portsmouth, N.H.; his sister, Ernestine "Sis" and her husband, Bob Clement, of Hancock; and brothers, Calvin of Ellsworth, Rodney of Ellsworth and Charles and his wife, Marsha, of Portland. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at First Congregational Church, UCC, 2 Church St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Nick Davis officiating. Family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the services at the church fellowship hall. Spring interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
