Dr. John Francis McClellan, 64, of Marshfield died Wednesday in his home. Dr. McClellan was born May 8, 1949, to the late Elizabeth and Francis McClellan, a DuPont receptionist and sheet metal worker respectively. Growing up in Weymouth, Dr. McClellan earned academic and athletic notoriety, winning state titles in track and field as well as leading his basketball team to play in the Boston Garden. After graduating from Weymouth High School as the president of his class, he continued his legacy at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. While at Bowdoin he was president of his class, president of his fraternity, and captain of his basketball team, of which he was an Academic All-American. Upon graduating Bowdoin Magna cum Laude in 1971, Dr. McClellan took his talents to Philadelphia to attend the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Medical School. While in Philadelphia, he spun records on the side under the moniker DJ Mad Mac from Boston. His love for music never waned and his ability to name songs and artists was always unmatched. After finishing at UPenn in 1975, Dr. McClellan headed to back to Massachusetts where he performed his internship and residency at New England Medical Center (now Tufts) and met nurse Catherine (Gallagher) Teal. They relocated to Marshfield, where he was to raise a family and spend the rest of his life. Dr. McClellan (or Dr. Mac as his patients fondly called him) served the Plymouth medical community for 35 years including as an Internist, Medical Director of Plymouth Medical Group, chairman of an overseeing committee at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and the Chief of Internal Medicine at Jordan Hospital (among many other prestigious titles). His unrelenting compassion for his patients and community were seen in his extensive medical practice and involvement with local charitable organizations. He is survived by his two sisters, Maurine Wells and Peggy Ruuska; former wife, Catherine Teal; and their four children, Christine Robertson and her husband Brad Robertson of Marshfield, and Catherine, Peggy, and Michael McClellan of Boston. He is also survived by two beautiful grandchildren, Owen and Drew Robertson. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the McClellan children ask that you please give a charitable donation to Marshfield Community Christmas, a cause that was very dear to Dr. McClellan's heart. This organization gives to the community's less fortunate families. Visiting hours were held Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1-5 p.m. at MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean St., in Marshfield. The funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Assumption, 40 Canal St., in Marshfield, Monday, Sept. 16, at 10:30 a.m. For online guest book, please visit our Web site, macdonaldfuneralhome.com.
