->Montville - John F. Holmgren, III, 71, of 242 Lynch Hill Road, Oakdale, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 13, 2010, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London after a courageous and extended battle with cancer.He was born in New London on Nov. 21, 1938, the son of John F. Jr. and Marjorie Silvia Holmgren. John married Emma Meardy on Nov. 10, 1956, in Groton.He graduated from Robert E. Fitch High School in the class of 1956, and worked at Electric Boat Company in Groton for 35 years retiring as a general foreman in the maintenance department in 1993.An avid outdoorsman and traveler, he was a member of the Norwich Rod and Gun Club. He also belonged to Propbusters Model Airplane Club, Electric Boat Athletic Club and he was an antique car enthusiast.Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Chris Holmgren and wife, Cathy, of Oakdale; two daughters, Marcy Nelson and husband, Lynn, of Uncasville and Deb Flynn and her fiancé, Charlie Beal, of Westerly; a sister, Barbara Bogue and husband, John, of Uncasville; seven grandchildren, Ryan and Brittney Holmgren, Erik, Olin and Annali Nelson, Cassidy Flynn and his wife, Mel, and Baylee Flynn; his large extended family and his beloved Duffy. He is also survived by his many special friends in Propbusters and at Yale's and a very special hunting partner, Harry Sherman.A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday morning at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Interment will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery.
