John "Jack" E. Joyce Jr. of Morristown, N.J., passed away peacefully at his home on June 13, 2014, at the age of 88. Hours of visitation are Wednesday, June 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Doyle Funeral Home, 106 Maple Ave., Morristown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ the King, New Vernon, N.J. The burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Orange, N.J. Jack was born in Newark, N.J., the son of Theresa and John Joyce. A graduate of Seton Hall Prep, Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, transporting occupation troops to Japan. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College. A mechanical contractor, Jack started his career as a pipefitter's helper. He ran a successful industrial plumbing, pipefitting and air conditioning business with his father and brother. Upon the death of his father, he and his brother, Bob, started an electrical-mechanical maintenance business until he retired. He was active in the mechanical contracting business in the state of New Jersey. Jack was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal from the MCAA in recognition for his many services to the industry. He was a board member and past president of the Mechanical Contractors of New Jersey and served on the national board of the MCAA for many years. Vitally interested in the training and also advancing the skills of the trade, he was a founding member of the education committee for Local Union 475, and education committee for Local 68. Jack was proud of his role in creating a statewide plumbing licensing system. His plumbing license was No. 7. Jack was a member of the IRC (Industrial Relations Council) serving as chairman. He was president of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau for 25 years, and president of the N.J. Construction Congress. Jack was always fascinated by politics. Active in community and civic affairs, he was Warren Democratic committee chairman, served on the Warren County Tax Board, PCFA (Pollution Control Finance Authority) and the Warren County Advisory Committee on Alcoholic and Drug Abuse. Jack was a generous man. He had a strong faith in God and a commitment to the Catholic church. He was always active in his parish. Jack served on the parish council, taught religious education, was a lector and Eucharistic minister, but the role in loved best was playing Santa for Catholic Charities in Phillipsburg, N.J. Outside his parish, he worked with Mother Teresa's nuns in Newark, N.J., by modernizing the plumbing. He was delighted to be thanked personally by Mother Teresa. Jack thoroughly enjoyed his life, his family and his friends and made good use of the opportunities God afforded him. He had a big heart, a good sense of humor and a wonderful smile, and especially loved being named "Irishman of the Year" in 1988. In his retirement years Jack enjoyed traveling to exotic places and scuba diving with his wife, Carol. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his sister, Mary Therese Joyce, his six children, Cecilia Manriquez and husband, John, Julia Piazza and husband, Sam, John III, Matthew and wife, Cathy, Lucy Joyce and husband, Chris Lewis and Timothy; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews, and his former wife, Lucy C. Joyce. Jack was predeceased by his brother, Robert, and his sisters, Jane Daly and Elizabeth Kerwin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Eva's Village.
