DOVER -- John E. "Jack" Hurley, 76, died Aug. 9, 2009, at Riverside Rest Home after a long illness. He was born in Creston, Iowa, on June 2, 1933, to Joseph and Loretta (McCann) Hurley. He attended St. Philomena Grammar School and St. Philip High School in Chicago. He served in the U.S. Navy from December 1955 to September 1957 as an electronics technician aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex, CVA-9 on Far East and Latin American cruises. He later earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1966 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He worked as a civil engineer for the Veterans Administration hospital in Danville, Ill., and then transferred to Manchester in 1970. He retired from engineering at the Housing and Urban Development office in Manchester. In earlier years he enjoyed sailing, chess, tennis and golf. Family includes sons Michael Hurley of Dover, William Hurley of Manchester and Thomas Hurley of Weare; two granddaughters; sister Patricia Frisch of Albuquerque, N.M.; nieces and nephews. SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A funeral is Thursday at 11 a.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. For more information, go to www.taskerfh.com.
