John Edward Casey, 92, of Fayetteville, died peacefully. Jack was born in Syracuse on July 4, 1921 to the late Robert John and Grace Ann Tague Casey. He attended Cathedral Academy and graduated from Nottingham High School. He received a scholarship for football and basketball and attended Dean Academy in Franklin, MA (now Dean Junior College) until his studies were interrupted by WWII. Jack joined the Navy in 1943 and attended George Washington University while training. Upon returning home he attended Onondaga Community College. He was in business until joining his father's restaurant business, Bob Casey's Inn in DeWitt, where he was manager for 27 years. Following he worked 21 years for NY State. Jack was appointed a Deputy Sheriff of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office and served as a Court Officer to Judge Leo F. Hayes, NY State Supreme Court for over 10 years, a job he truly loved in his retirement. Jack's love of sports and especially SU sports began at an early age. The SU team trained at his father's business, Shore Acres Resort in Cazenovia from 1930 to 1935. Jack and his wife, Joan were avid fans of SU sports and were charter members of the Orange Pack and Orange Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of CNY. They were honored by the SU Athletic Department in 2004 in recognition of their longtime support of SU Athletics. He was a member of the Blind Men & Criers (Marching and Chouder Society) and received the Babe LaRose Memorial Sports Fan Award for his dedication and enthusiastic support of CNY sports teams. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Montague Casey; cousins, Anne Tague Byrne, Sr. Mary Jean Tague, Bro. James Fitzgibbons and Tom Fitzgibbons; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Casey. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville. Services will be 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and noon at Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs St., Fayetteville. Burial with military honors will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse.
