John-Douglas Hall, born in 1918, father of Charles and Jane, died on July 31, 2006. Please consult the obituary here:
HALL _ John Douglas, passed away suddenly on July 31, 2006, at St. Paul's Hospital. John was born on March 29, 1918 in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and educated in England. He was a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War when he was captured by the enemy in 1943 and interned in prison camp in northern Italy. He escaped twice from the camp, the second time successfully, and he spent many months evading recapture before being reunited with the allied forces. Repatriated to England, he met and married Peggie, the love of his life, in 1944. In 1954, the family of 5 immigrated to Canada. Despite hard times early on, John built a successful business career over the next 23 years in Winnipeg and Saskatoon, and retired in Vancouver in 1977. He will be sorely missed by Peggie, his daughter and son, Jane (Finlayson) and Charles, by his son-in-law Barry and by his grandson Jamie Finlayson, his granddaughters Heather Finlayson and Barbara Hall, by his new granddaughter-in-law Natalia Finlayson, by his sister-and brother-in-law, Betty Blake and Hamish Turner, and by his nieces and nephews in England and the United States, as well as by his many friends in Vancouver and elsewhere. In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Paul's Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. At John's request, there will be no service.
