Obituary of John-Brand II


John II of Brand Insurance Agency and Arnot Realty Corp. Age 88, of 350 Lovell Ave., Elmira NY, died Monday morning, June 20, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Lynda Salyer Brand; his son, John Brand III and his wife, Dorrie of Elmira; his daughter, Mary B. Kemberling of Jarrettsville, MD; his daughter, Nancy B. Barringer and her husband, George of Elmira; his four grandchildren, John Hudson Brand of Syracuse, Laura Arnot Brand of New York City, John Brand Kemberling and Adam Arnot Kemberling of Jarrettsville, MD; his two stepdaughters, Molly M. Frankel and her husband, Dan of Boston, MA, and Mara B. Moore of Watertown, MA; his step grandchildren, Abby Salyer Frankel and Thayer Kain Frankel of Boston, MA; his cousin, C. William Brand of Denver, CO. He was predeceased by his first wife, Harriet Hoffman Brand in March 1986. He was a graduate of Union College and attended Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration until appointment as a Staff member of the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which was engaged in the World War II development of microwave radar. Later, as a Lieutenant in the Navy, he was assigned to the staff of the Liaison Officer who was an intermediary between the Laboratory and the various bureaus of the Navy. He founded the former Brand Insurance Agency in 1939 which was absorbed by Perry & Carroll Inc. in 1998. He had been Chairman of the Chemung County Chapter American Red Cross, a member of the Board of Managers of the Arnot Ogden Medical Center since 1952 and corporate Secretary of the institution for twenty-one years, Chairman and President of The Rathbone Corporation and the Arnot Realty Corporation. He was a principal participant in the construction of The Arnot Mall. He was a member of The Park Church, Elmira City Club, Elmira Country Club. As an avid railroad enthusiast, he happily rode "in the cab" on trains in this country and in Europe. A memorial service will be held in The Park Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 24th. Pastor Arthur C. Reed and Pastor Emeritus Robert Lester will officiate. A private interment of John's ashes will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira. Flowers are gratefully declined.
