John A. Savage III died in his home in Gresford, North Wales, U.K. on March 3, 2012, at the age of 99. Born in New York City, Mr. Savage lived in Wales with his wife, Pearl, for the past 18 years. He previously lived in Newark, N.J., and Summit, N.J., as well as Fort Myers and Key Biscayne, Fla. Mr. Savage was an alumnus of Newark College of Engineering (New Jersey Institute of Technology) with a degree in mechanical engineering, and was president and valedictorian of his graduating class of 1938. He later received a degree in environmental technology from Florida International University. From 1942 to 1945, 'Jack' Savage was a captain with the 3rd Engineer Special Amphibian Brigade. He was part of an advance echelon group for beach reconnaissance and demolition and participated in four assault landings throughout the Pacific. In 1948, Mr. Savage, as a senior engineer with Shell Oil Company, designed the first bottom loading system of fuel into trucks which today remains the international standard for truck design and underwing refueling of aircraft. Mr. Savage was a lifetime member of the SAE, Fuel Merchants of New Jersey, Society of Professional Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers. John Savage is survived by his loving wife, Pearl; sons, Brian and wife Cindy, and Gregory and wife Sharon; grandchildren, Mark and wife Carrie, Dana, John and Ben, along with two great-grandchildren, Hadley and Ashlyn, all in the United States. He is also survived by his family in Wales, Susan and Phil Edgar and Michael and Brenda Parry, and grandchildren, Sarah, Thomas, Ellen, James and Michael. He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Marie Savage; son, John A. Savage IV; his sisters, Ethel Walton, Eileen Balas, and brother, Malcolm Savage. A private burial was held in Summit, N.J. In lieu of gifts of condolence, donations to the John A. Savage Memorial Scholarship may be made to the Foundation of NJIT ( memo to John A. Savage Scholarship) and mailed to New Jersey Institute of Technology, University Advancement, 323 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Newark, N.J. 07102, Attn: Collen Vandervort, 224 Eberhardt Hall.
