PATERSON - Dr. John "Jack" A. III, Dean Emeritus of Seton Hall University, age 69, died December 1, 2002, in Wayne, after suffering from a short illness. Born in New York, he graduated from Georgetown University in 1954, the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1958, and served as Chief Resident in Maxillofacial Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, from 1967 to 1970. He served in the United States Navy as Lieutenant, where he flew F4UF's. During the 1950's, Dr. Paterson flew many missions to Iceland, Sweden and the Caribbean Sea. He was called to active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1961. His academic appointments included those of Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Farleigh Dickinson University from 1970 to 1972, Professor and Chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Anesthesiology, Fairleigh Dickinson University from 1972 to 1989, and Clinical Professor of Surgery at St. George's University, school of Medicine in 1985. Dr. Paterson practiced Oral Surgery, in Wayne, for many years and was a partner in the North Jersey Oral Surgeons practice, serving many area hospitals. He was the Chairman of Dentistry, in St. Joseph's Hospital, in Paterson, from 1974 to 1994, Director of Medical Education, Vice-President of Medical Affairs and was appointed Senior Vice-President at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center from 1982 to 1994. He was largely responsible for St. Joseph's Hospital becoming a Children's Hospital, one of the first in our area. In 1989, he was appointed Professor of Graduate Medical Education at Seton Hall University. He was appointed Dean of the School of Graduate of Medical Education at Seton Hall University in 1992, where he created many innovative programs. Dr. Paterson instituted the ground work, laying the foundation for a Catholic Medical School at Seton Hall University, which he hoped would one day materialize. He gave numerous clinics and lectures to component societies, regional surgical societies, hospital staffs and continuing education groups in the United States and Europe. The Journal of the New Jersey Dental Association published a position paper, written by Dr. Jack Paterson, and that position was incorporated into the legislation that ultimately became State regulation. At the time of his death, Jack was working on and had almost completed another PhD. in Philosophy. His main concern was patient care and medical ethics. He was the author and co-author of more than twenty published journal articles and books. Dr. Paterson is the beloved husband of Lois Ann Paterson (nee Corsetto). He is also survived by his son, Jack, of Denver, Colorado, a daughter, Gina, of Seattle, Washington, and a brother, Arthur of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Anthony, and his parents, John A. Paterson and Grace Cologrande Paterson. An avid reader and golfer, Dr. Paterson leaves behind many dear and loving friends. Funeral Services Wednesday 10 AM at Vander Plaat-Vermeulen Memorial Home, 530 High Mountain Road, Franklin Lakes followed by a 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony's R.C. Church, Hawthorne. Interment Calvary Cemetery, Paterson. The family will receive friends Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
