Joel Edward KingMoultonJoel Edward King, 66, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2012, at his home. Joel was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County. He retired, after 25 years, from Lawrence County Board of Education as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He also sold New York Life Insurance for several years. He attended Athens State University and received his B.S. in History, later receiving his Masters in History and Special Education from University of North Alabama. Then he received his E.d.S in Educational Administration & Leadership from The University of Alabama in Birmingham.He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Martha King; three daughters, Cynthia Lynn King, Madison, Elizabeth King, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Mary JoLanna Scheer, husband, Lee, Brentwood, Tenn.; one sister, Deborah King, Moulton; and sister-in-law, Mary Swedenburg, Hoover. he is also survived by a wonderful aunt, Arthel Campbell, Lexington, and two dear uncles, Clyde King, Moulton and Dr. Grady King, Huntsville.He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Doris King and his wife's parents, James and Trannie Swedenburg; and brothers-in-law, James and Joe Swedenburg, several aunts and uncles.Joel was a member of Moulton Baptist Church, where he played the organ as a young man; a Sunday school and choir member; later, an adult Senior Men's Bible Class teacher for several years. He was a past Gideon. Past affiliations in education were memberships in NEA, AEA, LCEA and LCERA, serving on the legislative and advocacy committees. He was also a lifelong cattleman and a member of the Alabama Cattleman's Association.Joel was a loving, generous husband and father; a faithful son to his parents and grandparents, as well as a loving and loyal brother. Joel was a treasure to his wife and daughters. He will be dearly missed in the lives of his family.Funeral will be Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Moulton Baptist Church with Dr. Jessie Reeder, Ms. Mary Swedenburg and the Rev. Mark Wakefield officiating and Elliott Funeral Home directing. Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to Moulton Baptist Church for the Special Education Fund, 755 Walnut St., Moulton, AL 35650.
