Williams, age 84, beloved husband and father and retired superintendent of the McKenzie Special School District, passed away Saturday, March 17 at Jackson-Madison County Hospital.He leaves his wife of 58 years, Elaine Seale Williams of McKenzie, TN; a son, Joe Jr. (Kathy) of Memphis; and two daughters, Mary Elaine Brown of McKenzie and Laura Lei Williams of Ocala, FL. He also leaves a sister, Mary Margaret Joyce of Milan, TN; four grandchildren, Justin Brown (Kristi) and Jake Brown of McKenzie, DeeAnn Williams of Memphis, TN, Colton Barley of Morriston, FL; and four great-granddaughters.Born November 25, 1927 to Dr. James H. and Margaret Williams, Joe attended school in McKenzie and earned a football scholarship to the University of Kentucky where he played one season and roomed with teammate, George Blanda. He was drafted by the United States Navy in December 1946 and served two years before returning to Murray State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in education. He was a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent of the Holly Springs, MS Schools from 1951 to 1969. He returned to McKenzie in 1969 and served as principal and superintendent before retiring in 1995. He also earned a masters degree and education specialist degree from the University of Mississippi. He served on the McKenzie Industrial Board, McKenzie Planning Commission and Carroll County Board of Education, and was a member of the Lions Club for many years.Visitation is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, March 19 and services will be Tuesday, March 20, at 11 a.m., both at First United Methodist Church in McKenzie.The family requests that memorials be sent to the McKenzie Special School District, 114 Bell Ave., McKenzie, TN 38201 or the First United Methodist Church, 16 McTyeire St., McKenzie, TN 38201.
