Joan Margaret Kellas Funeral arrangements by Chapel Lawn Funeral Home Peacefully on February 11, 2005 at the Fred Douglas Lodge, Mom passed away at the age of 84 years with her family at her side. Joan will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years Douglas and their children, Bruce (Sigrid), Dianne, Elaine, Lorna (Michael), Robert (Sharon) and David (Sandy), 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 7 nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Margaret and many friends. Joan was predeceased by her mother and father (James and Cecelia Miller), her step-mother Anne, her brother Alex, sister-in-law Vi and brother-in-law Frank Kellas. Born in Winnipeg, Joan grew up in the North End attending Ralph Brown, Faraday and St. John’s High schools. During the war years, Joan worked at National Drugs Wholesale where she met her husband Doug, marrying in 1943. After the war, Joan and Doug built their home in Fort Rouge where they raised their family. When the children were young, Joan loved summers at the cottage at Grand Beach, with many happy times spent on the beach with family and friends. Her family was the pride and joy of her life, and she was a devoted mother. She also loved her gardens and spent many wonderful hours tending to her flowers and her vegetables. Joan was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Harrow United Church. She loved baking and was well known for her chocolate chip cookies, lemon loaf and raisin muffins. She also loved to knit and sew. Not only did Joan keep her children in mittens, scarves, sweaters, and toques, but also her grandchildren. Joan was the best mother and grandmother a child could wish for. In 1971, Joan and Doug moved to St Andrews, where she continued her gardening, and they became the caretakers for Little Britain United Church. When Doug retired they golfed and travelled to many courses throughout Manitoba. She loved the Hecla course the best. In 1991 they moved to Sandy Hook and then to Gimli. With failing health, Joan moved to Fred Douglas Lodge in 2002. In accordance with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. Our family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Spruce Ward at Fred Douglas Lodge for their loving care given to Mom.
