Joan Bayne "Baynie" WilliamsSCARBOROUGH - JOAN BAYNE "BAYNIE" WILLIAMS died peacefully on December 19, 2014 at her home in Scarborough.Joan Bayne "Baynie" Williams was born on July 12, 1922 in Montclair, NJ, the only child of Lillian Shields Bayne (born 1882) and John Niblock Bayne (born 1888). She married Alfred D. "Bud" Williams, Jr., in 1943. She is the beloved mother of Bruce Williams and his wife Patrice Janssen of Searsport, Alice Williams Hunt of Belgrade Lakes, and Matti Bradley and her husband Chris of North Yarmouth. Joan was pre-deceased by her husband and her daughter, Allie.She also leaves behind her grandson, Evan Hunt, and his wife, Anne, and great grandchildren Ana & George of Shanghai, China, her grandson, Robert Hunt, his wife Lucia, and great grandchildren Jack & Lillian of Yarmouth, granddaughter, Aislinn Williams of Vermont, grandson, Lt. John Bradley, U. S. Army, currently of Tacoma, Wash. and granddaughter Maggie Bradley of North Yarmouth.Joan attended Bennington College in 1940 - 1942 and later graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1980, with a bachelor's degree in religious studies. Along the way she lived in Reading, Penn., Ponce, Puerto Rico, West Chester, Penn., Chattanooga, Tenn., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. (1964-1984), Belgrade Lakes, Yarmouth, and Scarborough.Joan had a lifelong association with Camp Runoia for Girls in Belgrade Lakes, Maine that began when she first summered there in 1929. She co-founded the Caribe School in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1954 (now the Caribbean School). She was a tireless advocate for women's rights and family planning. While in California she volunteered through the Junior League, the Experiment in International Living, the Florence Crittenton Homes for Unwed Mothers, the Los Angeles Bishop's Guild, Los Angeles Neighborhood Youth Association, and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. In Maine she devoted her time to the Maine Youth Center for juvenile offenders, among others. Well into her 80s she was still marching on Washington and elsewhere on behalf of women's rights and the freedom to choose. She enjoyed traveling, later in life, to Europe, Russia, China, Kenya, Egypt & India among other places.Known for her generosity and infectious sense of humor, she enjoyed good company and found the good in everyone she ever met. A celebration of Joan's life will take place on Saturday, July 11th, 2015 at the Union Church, in Belgrade Lakes, Maine.Arrangements are under the care of Hobbs Funeral Home, US Route 1, Scarborough.
