Jessie Ruth Carter June 14, 1924- September 29, 2014 Columbus, Georgia- A visitation for Mrs. Jessie Ruth Baggett Carter, 90, of Columbus, will be held Friday, October 3, 2014 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home in Columbus. A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel in Anniston, AL with the Reverend Jimmy Elder officiating. Interment will follow at Remlap Cemetery in Blount County, AL. The family will receive friends Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Carter passed away peacefully September 29, 2014 at Gentiva Hospice in Columbus, GA. Mrs. Carter, known to everyone as Ruth, was born June 14, 1924 in Village Springs, AL to the late Jesse Baggett and Pearl Mae Sims Baggett Ellis. She was a member of First Baptist Church Columbus, GA. She had also been a member of First Baptist Church of Saks and Northside Baptist Church, both in Anniston, AL. Ruth would talk of surviving the depression, World War II, going to work in the 1940s as a young woman; and again as a mother in the late 1960s. Her family and her love of the Lord were always paramount in her life. She was a Tax Preparer for American Income Tax in Anniston for 35 years. She had volunteered in many capacities during her life, as a Candy Striper, PTA room mother, Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troup chairperson, and as a member of Altrusa of Columbus at various community events. In her retirement, she became a dedicated backyard bird watcher. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Johnie T. Carter; and a daughter, Stephanie Ruth Carter Patty. She is survived by a son, John Carter and his wife, Cheryl, of Huntsville, AL; a daughter, Jan Carter of Midland, GA.; grandchildren, Kira Patty and Charles Patty of Toney, AL and Cai Carter of Huntsville, AL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews across the United States. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the care given by Gentiva Hospice; and a special thanks to Home Care Services of Columbus for the love, support and care provided.
