Jeanne L. McKenna FRAMINGHAM Jeanne L. (Hillman) McKenna, a longtime educator at Marian High School in Framingham, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at home surrounded by her children. She was a parishioner and lector at St. Jeremiah Church in Framingham and taught at Marian for 37 years until her diagnosis with cancer last year. She was the wife of John J. McKenna who died in 2004. Born in Melrose and raised in Brookline, Jeanne graduated from Brookline High, active in many extracurricular activities and sports, earning a varsity letter on the swim team. Jeanne attended Northeastern University earning a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, the only woman in a class of 65 engineers and the only woman in a group of 187 graduating engineers. She was the second woman in Northeastern's history to receive this degree. Active in many extracurriculars and head cheerleader for two years, Jeanne was the first woman in NU's history to receive a varsity letter. She then attained a master of science degree in chemical engineering from Tufts University, where she received a teaching fellowship and a scholarship. Working at Lever Bros. in New Jersey, Jeanne worked on a project that developed the first sudsing detergent. She met her husband in New Jersey, later moving to Syracuse, N.Y., and then on to Framingham in 1961. Active in Framingham politics, Jeanne was a town meeting member and served as chairman of the Finance Committee for a number of years. Returning to work, Jeanne was a substitute teacher and a tutor until 1971 when she joined the faculty at Marian High School. Teaching mathematics, Jeanne was also head of the Mathematics Department, head of the Athletic Department, cheerleading coach and conducted many overseas school trips during her years at Marian. She is survived by her children, Carol McKenna of Sudbury, Rick McKenna and his wife, Cammy, of Framingham, Nancy McKenna of Newton and Susan Rishmany and her husband, Edward, of Tiverton, R.I.; and eight grandchildren. Relatives, friends and students are invited to attend her funeral Mass on Thursday, March 27, at 10 a.m., at St. Jeremiah Church, 43 Brook St., Framingham. Burial will follow in Edgell Grove Cemetery, Grove Street, Framingham. Visiting hours are Wednesday, March 26, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Boyle Brothers Funeral Home, 173 Union Ave., Framingham. Donations in Jeanne's memory can be made to Marian High School, 273 Union Ave., Framingham, MA 01702, to the attention of the Development Office.
