Jeanne-D-Arc-Marie-Laure Smith, born in 1933, died on April 11, 2008. Please consult the obituary here:
We Love You Mom Jeanne d'Arc Marie Laure Smith Generous. Kind. Just. Fair. Mentor. Activist. Advocate. Political. Strength. Conviction. Fortitude. Dignified. Courageous. Dynamic. Hospitable. Humour. Patience. Passionate. Ethical. Cooking. Bugs Bunny. These words describe our Mother. Michael Steckhan and Anne Marie Stohl celebrate our mother's life while announcing her passing on April 11th, 2008 in Saskatoon. We share our deep sorrow with grandson Kelly Bostock, sister, Terri Lefebvre-Prince, son-in-law Dan, daughter-in-law Joan, step-family Robert Jay Smith (Elaine) and Norma Smith, grandchildren Leah, Robbie and Darren Smith and her most special friend Peter McGregor (Ottawa) and, of course, Dugg. Mom was born in Shaunavon, SK on November 28, 1933. Her instructive childhood in Dollard formed her into a kind, strong and principled woman. She spent 31 years serving Canadians at Employment and Immigration, retiring in 1988 to be with her (and our) beloved Bob until his passing in June of 1993. In her care and compassion for others in the workplace, she dedicated herself throughout her career to the CEIU component of PSAC locally, provincially and nationally. After her retirement, her passion became the Association of Public Service Alliance Retirees (APSAR), a component she founded and ran as National President to work for all current and future federal retirees. She cherished her friendships of those across the country. Above all else, family came first. You taught us well. You fought the good fight as always. You loved life and embraced everything you faced with courage and dignity. We will carry your torch forever. It was Mom's wish that we celebrate her life, not mourn it. At her request there will not be a funeral - but we invite all her friends to join us at our family home - the Ranch - on Highway 5 on Friday, April 18th. Please drop in any time after 2:00 in the afternoon - we will be serving her favourites. We would like to thank the staff at City Hospital Ward 6300 and staff at Porteous Villa, with special thanks to Dr. Lois Stewart and Palliative Nurse Coordinator Shelley Jolly. In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations to the to APSAR, 1002-233 Gilmour Street, Ottawa, ON. K2P 0P2. Published in the Ottawa Citizen on 4/14/2008
