COLE, Jeanie (nee Smith) August 4, 1918 – February 25, 2012 Jeanie Cole, beloved wife, best friend and companion of Denis Cole for 64 years, passed away quietly on Wednesday, February 25, 2012 at the age of 93 years. Born in England she spent her childhood in Dublin where her father was the Chief Steward of Trinity College. Despite a sheltered upbringing she was an adventurer at heart and the war took her first to England and then to India where she served with the Women’s Army Corps. In 1948 she returned to England and worked as a secretary in a small medical practice. One of the doctors, Pauline Cole, introduced Jeanie to her brother Denis, a fellow adventurer who had just returned from Palestine. This is how she met the love of her life, Denis Cole, who would become her soul mate, companion and fellow traveller on the journey of life for the next 64 years. Travels continued as the young couple worked in Iraq for the next 3 years and then decided to see what Canada might have in store for them. They arrived in Calgary in 1952 with no jobs and very little money, but they had each other and that was all they needed. They were soon established and in 1953 added a son, Anthony John Hedley Cole to their family. A new job took them to Red Deer where in 1956 their daughter Susan Margaret was born. During the next 18 years, Jeanie nurtured their 2 children and at the same time excelled as a homemaker and energetic volunteer for the Anglican Church, Meals on Wheels and The Girl Guides of Canada. Travel continued to be a big part of her life with sailing adventures as well as visits to England, Israel, India and China. Her many journeys gave her a tolerance, understanding and love for people of all kinds. Grandchildren arrived and Jeanie was a fun loving Gran who was available for sleepovers, outings and endless pushes on the swing in her lovely garden. Until the end Jeanie remained a gracious and wonderful woman who will be missed by all who knew her. Jeanie leaves behind her husband Denis and two children, Tony Cole and Susan Lawson (David) along with 6 grandchildren, Jeremy, Jonathan, Daniel and Megan Lawson and Heather and Andrew Cole. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders (888-392-0392) or The Alzheimer Society of Canada (800-616-8816). The family would like to extend their warmest thanks to the care team at Wentworth Manor, Trafalgar, for their gentle care for Jeanie over the past few years. In living memory of Jeanie Cole, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200 ?
