Obituary of Jeane-Marie Whelan

-> Charlotte, NC - Jeane Marie "Overend" Whelan, passed away on November 20, 2005, in Charlotte, NC., from complications associated with Alzheimer's Disease. Mrs. Whelan was an elegant, graceful, deeply spiritual, fiercely loyal person, and beloved by all who knew her. Mrs. Whelan was born in Washington, D.C., on October 9, 1923, the daughter of John Francis and Cecilia (Cobb) Overend, while her father served as controller for the Baltimore district of the United States Shipping Board. She grew up in Queens Village, New York, where she attended public schools. Mrs. Whelan went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in 1946 from St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, and was working toward a Masters Degree in English at Columbia when she left to raise her family. On June 25, 1949, she married Frederick J. Whelan, M.D., in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, in Queens Village. With her husband she raised seven children in Huntington,New York. In 1984 they retired to the Landings, in Savannah, Georgia. In 1999 they moved to the Cypress Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mrs. Whelan made many friends in each of her communities, and contributed by volunteering as a Eucharistic minister visiting the elderly and infirm, at local hospitals, for Meals on Wheels, as a librarian in her children's elementary school library, as a Cub Scout den mother, and in the many quiet ways she provided comfort and guidance to others. Mrs. Whelan was a voracious reader, avid gardener, canny bridge player, ever-improving golfer, a crackerjack crossword puzzler, and a skillful amateur painter. But most of all she was a mother, successfully raising six boys and a daughter during the tumultuous sixties and seventies. During Mrs. Whelan's struggles with Alzheimer's she received great comfort, care and attention from the skillful and loving staff at the Stewart Health Center, at the Cypress Club, for which her family will always be grateful.Mrs. Whelan is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Frederick J.
