Carey, Jean W. TROY Jean W. Carey, 95, of 2218 Burdett Ave., died on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at the Eddy Village Green at Cohoes after a brief illness. Born in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of the late Harry Morehouse Startup and Harriet Kilroe Startup, and wife of the late Booth Carey. She was raised in Albany and resided in Troy since the early 1940s and was a graduate of Albany High School and the Mildred Elley School. Mrs. Carey was a volunteer for 50 years at the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary in the Corner Shop. She was also a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member of the Altar Guild, and volunteered in the Thrift Shop. She was a consummate knitter, knitting countless hats for newborns at Samaritan Hospital. Survivors include her children, Diane (Patrick) Simmons of Englewood, Fla., Susan (Walter) Nowik of Clifton Park, and Peter B. (Wendy) Carey of West Sand Lake; a grandson, Lt. Col. Todd (Erika) Simmons, USMC of Dumfries, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Patrick Simmons. She was predeceased by two sisters, Harriet Barth and Ruth Carroll. Relatives and friends may call at the Bryce Funeral Home, Inc., 276 Pawling Ave., Troy, on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m., at St. John's Episcopal Church, 146 First St., Troy with the Rev. Stephen Schlossberg, rector, officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Jean W. Carey to the Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary, 2215 Burdett Ave., Troy, NY 12180, or St. John's Episcopal Church, 146 First St., Troy, NY 12180.
