<!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->Jan. 13, 1923 - Feb. 15, 2015 Eugenia "Jean" Sibley Shinn of Mobile passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, James "Jim" Shinn, her parents, Eugene and Mary (Groom) Sibley and her sister, Mary Katherine (Sibley) Turner. She is survived by her three children, Soria "Peaches" Ford (Pete), Jimmy "Buster" Shinn (Julie) and Donnie Shinn (Celi); four grandchildren, Holley Ford, Peter Ford (Ginny), Colby Shinn and Gabe Shinn; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Grace Ford and nieces and nephews. As a Mobile native, Jean spent many of her childhood summers on the bay. She graduated from Murphy High School in 1940 and soon after, enrolled at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Jean moved back to Mobile and began working at Brookley Air Field. It was there that she met the love of her life, Jim Shinn, at an officer's dinner. After the war, the couple married on July 10, 1946 in Mobile. Jean was a devout Catholic. She was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Eucharistic Minister and Ladies Sodality member. After Jean raised her children, she worked for the Mobile County Public School System for nearly two decades, before retiring in 1988. She also worked as a secretary at Sheffield School of the Dance for five years. In her spare time, Jean loved to cook and root on the Crimson Tide. She had a special group of friends from elementary and high school who met once a month to socialize over lunch. This unique bevy of women, known as the "Nit Wits", even had a book written about them. In Jean's later years, she had the privilege of residing at Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Residence. The kindness and compassion she received was unmatched. Jean's family is eternally grateful to everyone who touched her life during her two years there. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 19, 2015 from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Little Sisters of the Poor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Little Sisters of the Poor. Interment will be at Pine Crest Cemetery on Dauphin Island Parkway.
