Obituary of Jean-Ryan Hewitt


Jean Ryan Hewitt 1925 - 2008 BURLINGTON Jean Ryan Hewitt died Nov. 12, 2008, at Vermont Respite House in Williston. Jean was born in the Douglas family home at 11 Spruce Street in Brattleboro on April 5, 1925, to Frederick Ryan and Lillian Douglas Ryan. She graduated from Brattleboro High School class of 1943 and The University of Vermont class of 1947. Known by all for her energy, spirit and love of the outdoors, she was a research technician for the University of Vermont School of Medicine for over 40 years. Her favorite pastimes were skiing, tennis, fishing, reading, and spending time at her camp at Brae Loch in Colchester. After retiring, she volunteered at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. She leaves her sisters, Gloria Guhl of Santa Maria, Calif., and Janice Haag of Northglenn, Colo.; sons, Douglas F. Hewitt of Moretown, Francis "Sam" Hewitt Jr. and his wife, Sharon W. Hewitt, of Ipswich, Mass.; step daughters, Carol Bitter of Burlington and April Hewitt of Colchester; grandchildren, Christine Ryan and Josh Bitter, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis, and by her sister, Sylvia Lenz of Sacramento, Calif. A celebration of her life will be held at Brae Loch this summer.
