ROGERS, Jean Evelyn (Ferguson) Passed away at the Queensway Carleton Hospital at the age of 91, on March 11, with her children by her side. Born following the Halifax Explosion, at the YMCA emergency military hospital in Halifax, on February 7, 1918, she was the daughter of Harold and Martha (Roberts) Ferguson. A proud Haligonian, who grew up in the Hydrostone neighbourhood in Halifax's North End, Jean served as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during the Second World War, distinguishing herself in rifle marksmanship. After the war, she became a military wife, raising her children on various bases in Ontario and Germany and then in Ottawa, before returning to Nova Scotia, where she lived in Sydney, Ship Harbour, and Halifax. She also spent many memorable winters in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where she made numerous close friends. Jean moved to Ottawa in 2005 in order to be closer to her children. An avid bridge player, she was very active in church work and contributed to many charitable causes, including Meals on Wheels in Halifax and the Saville Knitters of Ottawa, a group that knits hats and tuques for school children. Known for her keen wit and Bluenose humour, she was an excellent cook and baker, presiding over many meals that still make for mouth-watering memories. Predeceased by her parents, her loving husband, Major (Retired) Peter G. Rogers, her brother Earl Ferguson, and her sister, Laura Peters, she is survived by her brother Robert Ferguson, her son Byron (Claudette Fortin), and her daughters Dianne and Suanne (John Bell). She is also survived by her grandchildren Natasha Rowe (Mike Rowe), Jason Throop, Chelsea Throop, Nicholas Bell (Charity Bell), Emily Honegger, and Max Honegger, and by four great-grandchildren: Cameron Bell, Mason Bell, Aidan Bell, and Finnegan Rowe. Arrangements have been entrusted to Tubman Funeral Homes in Westboro, Ottawa, where family and friends may gather between 5:00-7:30 PM on Saturday, March 14. A burial service will be held in Pictou, Nova Scotia at a later date. Donations in memory of Jean may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Salvation Army.
