BEAULNE, The Honorable Justice Jean-Pierre, Q.C. 1925 - 2009 It is with great sadness that the Beaulne family announces the passing of Justice Jean-Pierre Beaulne, in Ottawa, on January 12, 2009, surrounded by his family. He will be greatly missed by his wife Louise Lafleur, his children Emmanuelle, Philippe (Elizabeth Hilaire) and Brigitte (Philippe Syp), and his grand-children Thais, Raphaelle, Stephane and Nicolas. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law Estelle Chasse (the late Lieutenant-Colonel Henri Chasse) and Roxane Desmarais (the late Louis Desmarais), his brother-in-law and sister-in law Robert and Louise Lafleur, as well as his goddaughters Annick Chasse, Danile Mailhot and Pascale Beaulne. A well-known lawyer with a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Ottawa, a law degree from Osgoode Hall and a Graduate Studies degree in Civil Law from the University of Ottawa, he served as a judge with the Ontario Court of Justice for more than 25 years and chaired the Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP from 1992 to 1997. He was also a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Section Common Law, of the University of Ottawa for 25 years. He served his country as a Royal Canadian Air Force navigator during the Second World War and as a platoon commander in the Royal 22 Regiment and war correspondent during the Korean War. He was known for his profound involvement in his community, whether in the areas of law, health care or arts, and his unrelenting promotion of the rights of Francophones, particularly Franco-Ontarians. He had been a member of the University of Ottawa's Board of Governors for many years. He chaired various boards of directors, such the Montfort Hospital Board of Directors and the Ottawa-Carleton Regional District Health Council, and presided over numerous organizations, including the Ottawa Health Sciences Centre, the Canadian Society of Criminology and the Institut canadien-francais d'Ottawa. He was instrumental in the creation of the Common Law French program at the University of Ottawa and in the fight for the provision of health care services in French in the Ottawa region. He put his passion for the theatre and the arts to the service of artistic organizations, namely as president of Theatre Canada and president and cofounder of the Ottawa Arts Court. He received many awards and distinctions, such as the title of Queen's Counsel, the Meritas-Tabaret Trophy from the University of Ottawa, the Order of Merit from the Association of French Speaking Jurists of Ontario and the Key to the City of Ottawa. He will be remembered as a generous man deeply committed to his family and his community. The funeral will take place at the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Ottawa, Sussex Drive, on Saturday, January 17, at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends may pay their respects at RACINE, ROBERT AND GAUTHIER Funeral Home, 180 Montreal Road, Ottawa (613-241-3680), on Friday, January 16, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The family would like to thank Doctor Robert Eaton as well as the medical staff at the Ottawa General Hospital and the Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital for their exceptional care and great humanity. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Bruyere Foundation or the Montfort Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. Life stories and tributes may be shared online at www.mem.com
