FORT KENT - Jean Paul Duval, 87, passed away peacefully Dec. 3, 2010, in Fort Kent. Jean Paul was born July 23, 1923, in St. Antonin, Quebec, one of seven children to Dorilla Levesseur and Telesphore Duval. His formal education was short lived, as he only attended school until third grade, but his working career was just beginning, as he came to the U.S. in 1937 at age 14 to work in the woods cutting pulp. He later drove taxi for Pete Freeman and eventually owned his own taxi and ferried bonded Canadian woodsmen from Fort Kent to Shin Pond, Ashland, Pierce Pond and anywhere else the men needed to go. In the early 1950s he went to work for Great Northern Paper Co., as a bond agent, working with customs and immigration. During the last 18 years with Great Northern Paper Co. he held the position of scaler, and as a clerical worker at Glendale Siding, Fort Kent. Jean Paul was the oldest living member of Lions Club, having served for 50-plus years. He enjoyed volunteering his time to civic organizations and had a love of the outdoors. This gave him a desire to provide the community, specifically families with young children, with a safe, fun and inexpensive winter sport. This eventually led him to manage Lonesome Pine Trails, Fort Kent, with his wife, Helene, for 21 years. Jean Paul retired from Great Northern Paper Co. in 1986. He and Helene greatly enjoyed their retirement spending time with family and pursuing their hobbies, which included ice fishing, snowmobiling, gardening and picking fiddleheads and berries. Jean Paul is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helene Nadeau Duval of Fort Kent; three daughters, Pauline Theriault and her husband, Frank Theriault, of Fort Kent, Patsy Plourde and her husband, Claude Plourde, of Portage Lake and Susan Gardner and her husband, Allan Gardner, of Allagash; three sons, Robert Duval and his companion, Kathy Klein, of East Millinocket, Phil Duval and his wife, Sue Duval, of Fort Kent and Ronnie Duval and his wife, Michelle Duval, of Portland; as well as 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Alphonse Duval and his wife, Melanie Duval, of St. Francois, New Brunswick. He was predeceased by three sisters, Aurore Plourde, Diana Paradis and Laurine Dubois; as well as three brothers, Odilon Duval, Rosaire Duval and Lawrence Duval. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Spring burial will be held May 17, 2011, at the parish cemetery. Those who wish may donate in his memory to Greater Fort Kent Ecumenical Food Pantry, 229 West Main St., Suite 103, Fort Kent, ME 04743.
