MANN, Jean Simpson We sadly advise that Jean passed away on September 17, 2012, after a short illness. Born on July 31, 1925 and raised in Ottawa, Jean was the only daughter of James and Jane McMillan of Arbroath, Scotland. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Howard, she was a loving mother of daughters Katherine (Bob), Alison (John) and Valerie (John), and devoted grandmother of James and Graeme and aunt of Larry (Lyn). Jean graduated from the University of Toronto in 1947 with a BA (Hon. History), and maintained a close connection with the U of T through the Alumni Association - Vancouver Branch, acting as its president from 1991 to 1993 and receiving U of T's Arbor Award in 1993 recognizing her outstanding service to the university. Married in Toronto in 1948, Jean and Howard lived there, in Moncton and in Ottawa before moving to Vancouver in 1970. Obtaining her B.Ed. and M.A. from UBC, she became a passionate advocate of a strong educational system. An active member of the University Women's Club, Jean served as its president from 1994 through 1995, participating in a number of Canadian Federation of University Women conferences, and co-authoring "Women Lead the Way - a History of the UWC of Vancouver from 1907 to 2007", published in 2007. She was also a long time member of the West Point Grey Presbyterian Church. Jean will be particularly remembered for her love of family, enquiring mind and her passion for travel, reading, music and theatre. A celebration of Jean's life will be held on November 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at The University Women's Club - Hycroft (1493 McRae Avenue, Vancouver).
