Jean Johnson, 81, of Whiting, N.J., died on Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, in the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, N.J. A viewing will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Bedminster, N.J. A celebration of Jean's life will begin at 2 p.m. at the funeral home during the viewing hours. Mrs. Johnson was born in Passaic, N.J., on Jan. 10, 1930, a daughter of the late Robert and Mary Auerbach Fischer. She had resided in Nutley, N.J., and Beaver, Pa., before moving to Whiting 13 years ago. Mrs. Johnson was an executive and legal secretary, employed most recently by Donohue, Donohue, Costenbader and Strasser in Nutley before retiring. Jean was an avid cook and quilter. She loved to play bridge and belonged to various bridge clubs. She was a former member of St. Vincent United Methodist Church in Nutley. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, William K. Johnson, on Oct. 28, 2006, and by a son, David W. Johnson, on Feb. 27, 1997. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth J. Lynch, and her husband, Thomas, of Alexandria Township, N.J.; two brothers, Robert Fischer of Nutley and Carl Fischer of Warwick, N.Y., and four sisters, her twin, Joan Cunningham of Whiting, Lucy Freeman of Newtown, Conn., Lorraine Shucker of Whiting and Mary Ann Sandford of Greer, S.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Veterans Association of America, the National AIDS Foundation, or to the ASPCA.
