JOHNSON 1991 - 2006 Janine "Nina" Felicia Johnson blessed her family with 15 wonderful years for which they are deeply grateful. Nina, as she was known to all, was born in Fort Nelson BC on June 23, 1991 at 6:00 am, and died at 3:30 pm on Friday, July 21 at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. She was a wonderful sister, a devoted daughter, and an inspiration to her three siblings, Jade (17), Bruce (11), and Melinda (8), who will miss her good humour, fun loving nature and kindness. Nina was an excellent, high achieving student and a natural athlete who was well-loved by her fellow students, friends and teachers. She was a hard working individual in all of her endeavors, and had discovered her outstanding wood working abilities in the last few years. As Nina struggled with a congenital heart condition since January of this year, she was always stoic and uncomplaining. The nurses and doctors who worked with her found her an inspiring and remarkable person who worked hard at everything from physiotherapy to speech therapy exercises. She was a fun-loving, intelligent, witty, articulate, generous, and loving young woman who had dreams of becoming a writer. Nina was always kind and thoughtful, and was cherished by her many friends at Norkam Secondary, where she was a grade 9 student. Nina's fondest wish was that her experience would raise awareness about the need for people to support organ donor programs everywhere in order to give others a chance to live. During her illness, she spoke out about this issue publicly, encouraging people to sign up for organ donor programs on radio, television and newspaper interviews. In a letter she started before her transplant in May, she wrote that in this time of great difficulty, it has also been a time of joy because of all the love and generosity that friends, family and her community have shown in so many ways. She was profoundly moved that her school and the community at large mobilized to support her and her family throughout her illness. That outpouring of support was a deep comfort to her while she was in the hospital in Vancouver, and although she was not able to finish that letter, Nina would want those feelings of thanks and appreciation to be expressed publicly. Nina's family would also like to express their profound gratitude to the people who have supported and cared for Nina and her family in this difficult time. In particular, Lynne Mozley at The David Foster Foundation, the entire team at BC Children's Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Nina found great comfort in the caring and professional attention she received from the health care professionals, and her family is deeply grateful for their dedicated work. The family would also like to thank Sandy at The Make A Wish Foundation. The Funeral Service will be at 4:00 pm on Friday, July 28, 2006 at the Kamloops Calvary Community Church, 1205 Rogers Way, Kamloops. Donations in Nina's memory to The David Foster Foundation, 212 Henry St., Victoria BC V9A 3H9, BC Children's Hospital Foundation, 4480 Oak St., Vancouver BC V6H 3V4, or St. Paul's Hospital, 1081 Burrard St, Vancouver BC 6Z 1Y6, would be appreciated by the family, in lieu of flowers.
