Humphrey, Janet PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. Mrs. Janet Glenn (Harlow) Humphrey, age 71, wife of James Stevenson Humphrey Jr., of Phoenixville, Pa., died late Tuesday evening March 22, 2011 at their home after battling lung and liver cancer for over five years. Born in Halifax County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Jim Nicholson and Elsie Louise (Sparks) Harlow. She was a graduate of Chowan College and received her bachelor of music education from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., in 1962, the same year she married her husband at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church in the Darlington, N.C., community. Her love of music encompassed her life, teaching piano for over 30 years, composing music and creating wonderful songs for children and families. In addition to music and dance (she started tap dancing at age 45 and progressed to hula and Middle Eastern styles), she was a wonderful communicator with friends and family in need of understanding and help dealing with personal challenges. In addition to her husband Steve, Mrs. Humphrey is survived by her son Dana Stevenson Humphrey of Colonial Beach, Va.; and her daughter Mrs. Mimi Louise Martz, wife of John Martz in Middletown, Pa.; and granddaughter Megan Louise Martz. Her surviving siblings are Mrs. Merle Rogalski of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Louise Hessenflow of Wilmington, N.C., and James Edwin Harlow of Greenville, N.C. She has many relatives in the Darlington area where she was active as a young woman of what was a dynamic community as well as in Halifax County activities. She and her husband lived in the Schenectady area from 1966-1974.
