Janet Coleman Peterson Mitchell, Port Charlotte, died June 2, 2003. She was born in Hattiesburg, Miss. She grew up as an Army brat and studied music in Germany. She was a singer and was a contestant in the Miss America Pageant. She worked with the mentally ill in DeSoto, Hendry, and Glades counties and served as executive director of the Special Training and Rehabilitation educational facility and placement service for the mentally disabled and coordinated in-home care for the elderly of Charlotte County. She was a researcher, writer and public speaker. Survivors include her husband, Alan; her mother, Edrel of Port Charlotte; a son, Troy Peterson of Port Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Nash of Cincinnati; and one grandson. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Roberson Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Charlotte Chapel. Committal services and burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
