CHESTER - Janet Churchill Elliott, a devoted member of the Chester, Vt., community who was referred to as the "Town Historian," died at home on April 27, 2012. She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on March 29, 1933, to Lyle and Adena Churchill. She was joined by her brother, Jack Churchill, in 1936. He survives her in Macedon, N.Y. Her father was the coordinator of the Civilian Conservation Corps. As a young child, she traveled with her mother and brother across the country so the family could be together. When her father served in World War II, her family stayed with relatives in Middlebury, Vt. The family moved to Chester in 1945. Janet graduated from Chester High School in 1951. Her legacy to her alma mater was writing the school song. She obtained her bachelor's degree from Green Mountain College and a master's degree from a SUNY college. Fresh out of college, she began teaching home economics at the Dover School District in Dover Plains, N.Y. There she met George Elliott, married him in 1956 and reared four children. He survives her in Perkinsville, Vt. No matter how far from Chester Janet was, she always held Chester in her heart. After retiring from NYS Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities, where she provided staff development and training to employees, she longed to return to the community she loved so dearly. She purchased a home in Chester and quickly immersed herself in many local organizations. She belonged to the First Baptist Church of Chester, was a member of the Chester High School/Green Mountain Union High Schools Alumni Association and participated in the Stitchers Quilting Group. In addition, she was a board member of two organizations, the Community Cares Network and the Chester Players Guild. Janet enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, knitting and was an ardent letter writer. She is survived by four children, Lillian Miller of Chester, Vt., Amy Elliott of Millbrook, N.Y., George Elliott of Pawling, N.Y., and Emily Harf of Kent, N.Y., four grandchildren, two nieces, beloved cousins and many dear friends. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 2nd, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel. Services will be held Thursday, May 3rd, at 10:30 a.m. the Chester Baptist Church.
