Obituary of James-Wright Williams


BEAUFORT, S.C. — James Wright Williams, 93, Lt. Col. U.S. Army (Retired), died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at NHC Place in Franklin, Tennessee. He was born in Oxford, Alabama, a son of the late Dr. Mark Williams and Niena Wright Williams. He graduated in 1938 from the University of Alabama where he was a member of ATO fraternity. Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. He was a graduate of The Army Command and General Staff College. His overseas tours included Korea, Panama, Japan and Germany. Stateside, he served in various Army Forts, Air Force bases and the Department of Army General Staff at the Pentagon. He retired in 1968 and moved to Beaufort, S.C. He was a member of Carteret Street United Methodist Church, a former member of Lady's Island Country Club, Beaufort Yacht Club, Royal Pines Country Club and the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club. Later in life, he moved to Nashville, Tenn. to be closer to his daughter. Col. Williams is predeceased by his parents; his son, James Wright Williams Jr.; his wife, Iris Schnibben Williams and one brother, Mark J. Williams Jr. He is survived by two daughters, Sherrill Dossman, of Plano, Texas, Kathryn Williams, of Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, G. Coke Williams, of Anniston; four sisters, Mary A. Tartt, of Livingston, Louise W. Lokey, of Anniston, Jane Williams, of Birmingham and Clara Jo Jones, of Alexandria, Va.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2009, at Copeland Funeral Service followed by a graveside service at 12:30 p.m. in the Beaufort National Cemetery. Copeland Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
