NEWPORT - James Warren Casey, 84, of Newport died March 7, 2014 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was the husband of Ella M (Erikson) Casey. Mr. Casey was born Dec. 28, 1929, to John and Sophronia Casey in Holden, Mass. He joined the Merchant Marine in 1945 and spent the next 11 years sailing the seven seas on destroyers for the U.S. Navy spending time in many foreign ports around the world including Korea. Shortly after his marriage on July 12, 1954, Mr. Casey switched services to the U.S. Air Force and served another 11 years including a Vietnam tour. He enjoyed his travels in the Air Force including Loring Air Force Base in Maine, Kindley Air Force Base in Bermuda, Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and Clark Air Base in the Philippines. Upon retirement in 1967, Mr. Casey moved to Newport, with his family and worked briefly for Sturm Ruger Corporation, before embarking on a 25+ year truck driving career with Sanborn Express and PK Brown & Sons. After retirement, he often took long haul loads of log cabins to North Carolina for RS Daniels. A loving family man, he chose to stay in the military even after being offered a minor league contract to play baseball in New York as it offered his family stability. Some of his early pastimes included coaching women's softball teams and building speed boats. He enjoyed travelling across the country and to Canada visiting family and friends often fishing, hunting, playing cards, working on race cars and helping on building projects. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1236 in Newport where he served in many official capacities. Beside his wife of 59 years, family includes his beloved dog George, daughters Patricia Dickinson and her husband Elbert, and Jamie Teague and her husband Christopher, granddaughter Elan Dickinson, brother John Casey, sisters Irene Greene and Winifred Jeanne Jackson, sister-in law Erna McCormick and many, many nieces and nephews. Mr. Casey was predeceased by the following siblings: Margaret, Dorothy, Helen, Hazel, Mildred, Mary, Elizabeth, Phyllis, Pauline and Walter. . services: Arrangements are being handled by the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Parlor in Newport. There will be no viewing hours. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15 at the Newport Moose Lodge, 18 Golf Club Road, Newport, beginning at 1 p.m., officiated by Reverend Craig Cowing of the South Congregational Church, Newport. Refreshments and a celebration of Mr. Casey's life will follow. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Newport Moose Lodge #1236 for charitable activities in his memory.
