He was born in Chicago, raised in Kalamazoo Michigan, and considered South Florida his home having lived here forty five years. He served in the Navy as a paymaster during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan. Teaching was James' passion, and the work to which he devoted his life. He began this work in 1968, teaching at Miami Dade South Campus in the area of Business Administration. He helped begin and make successful the Wolfson campus in Downtown Miami and was committed to the principle that quality education be available to all who chose to pursue it. Receiving numerous awards as well as great respect for his work in the classroom, James Gray lived out a call to serve his students. He was motivated by the Christian values of respecting the dignity of every human being, and seeking and serving Christ in all persons. He inspired and set on a positive course the lives of his students as well as the many colleagues and friends who were blessed to have known him in this life. James was active in the Episcopal Church his entire life, living out his ministry in South Florida at St. Stephen's Coconut Grove.
