Obituary of James-Quitman Carter


James Quitman Carter, 86, husband of Mary Elizabeth Carter for 62 years, of 17 Creekdale Court, Greenville, S.C. and formerly of Savannah, Ga., died suddenly Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 at his home. Mr. Carter was born in Alma, Ga. on May 18, 1916 and resided at 334 Stephenson Ave. in Savannah until moving to Greenville, S.C. in Sept. of 2001. He was the son of the late George and Linnie Bennett Carter, a graduate of Alma High School, and retired from J. Q. Carter Furniture Company. He was a member of the Landrum Masonic Lodge for 50 years. During World War II he served his country in the U.S. Army and was part of the occupation forces in Japan. Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary Elizabeth, are three sons, Larry Carter and wife Bobbie of Montgomery, Ala., Jerry Carter and wife Theresa of Greenville, S.C. and Frank Carter and wife Pat of Savannah, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Robb Carter and wife Meagan of Montgomery, Ala., Mark Carter also of Montgomery, Ala., Troy Carter of Salt Lake City, Utah, Matthew, Ann, and Zachary Carter of Greenville, S.C., Katie Thompson and husband John of Savannah, Ga., and Brian Carter, also of Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Pauline C. Raulerson of Waycross, Ga. and Waunelle C. Britt of North Augusta; and two brothers, Alton Carter and Hughlet Carter, both of Alma, Ga. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hubert Baker Funeral Home on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah. The service will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, with interment in Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church in Savannah, GA, where Mr. Carter was a member. - Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, Greenville SC.
