He was pre-deceased in 2006 by his loving wife of 55 years, Edith. Jim attended local public schools, including South Broward High. He studied at The Citadel in South Carolina, Shrivingham American University in England, and then received his Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Florida in 1950. While there, he served as president of his fraternity, Delta Chi. James Hartley helped shape the look of the city of Hollywood from the 1950s through the 1990s. As a prominent architect, he designed buildings such as Nova University, Nova High School, and Nova Elementary School, as well as numerous other schools, churches, hospitals, banks, and county buildings. Jim was a founding member of the local Junto Club, which he faithfully attended his entire life. In 1959, Jim designed and built his own home on Pierce Street in Hollywood, where he resided until his death. Jim and Edie traveled throughout the world to such places as China, Japan, Central and South America, Scandinavia, Britain and Europe, Africa and Greece, but spent the last 20 years exploring and enjoying the United States by train, automobile, and riverboat. Jim was an avid fisherman spending countless enjoyable weekends with his wife and children in Chokoloskee on the west coast of Florida, and then later in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. A consummate fisherman, he spent many happy times with his friends and family fishing numerous waters all over the world, though his favorite fishing hole was the Florida Bay. Jim will be remembered not only for his generosity to others but also for his commitment to conservation. His immense appreciation for the outdoors and love of nature continues to thrive in his children.
